Meet Scott Clements with Arete Initiative
Meet Scott Clements with Arete Initiative, who are leaders in the art of guiding people and organizations towards achieving greater passion and purpose.
Passionate about helping to make things better for people and organizations, Scott joined Arete Initiative in 2019. Like all of us at Arete, Scott engages a variety of “named” roles like Report and Evaluation Lead, Project Lead, Community Animator and Space Cadet, among others. He loves the role clarity and that team members are the “CEO of that role” and he also loves how when someone has an idea that doesn't necessarily fit clearly within a role, any of us can take an “individual action” and just get things done. He fully embraces how we self-manage and “struggle well” at practicing ways of working more effectively together. Purposeful action taken and meetings with clarity of purpose and objectives, structure, and clear actionable results!
Scott says that one of his favourite learnings from Arete is our use of ‘So What? Now What?’ “This notion of helping surface intel and information with clients, sensing into it and helping them reach a place where they can self-assess (with a bit of help from the Arete team) ‘So what does this all mean and what do we best do about it?. “I’m so purpose and action driven that it’s the getting down to it part that really resonates with me. When I see clients evolving and eventually taking purpose-driven action and achieving results I get really excited.”
Upon getting to know Scott I noticed he can be quiet and very reflective, especially when engaged in collaborative and thoughtful conversations - the strength of a skilled and powerful listener. Then suddenly there is this burst of animation and humor (just a little on the dry side) with a wicked bit of naughtiness mixed in. He is so down to earth that every conversation with Scott is simply refreshing.
Scott and his wife Renate both love getting outdoors, especially into the mountains, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and backpacking. They also really enjoy their time hanging out with family and friends at their cabin. In addition to the mountain activities accessible at their cabin, they also enjoy sitting down to a good card or board game, especially one with a bit of strategy or a beautiful theme!
When asked who his hero was? He answered his parents. His Dad because he was such a gentle, caring guy and people loved him, and his mom because she’s fabulous and was always there for him driving him to 6am Sunday morning hockey when he was growing up.
Scott’s also been known to explore endless ideas, imagining how the world might be a better place, and just what that world might look like 25, 75 and 575 years from now! I think if we all gave a little more thought to that vision of a better future, like Scott, that future world just might have a chance to become that better place.
